Two workers killed in Saudi Arabia oil refinery accident

Two workers have been killed and a further two injured at an oil refinery in Saudi Arabia.

A statement from the Saudi Aramco-owned SASREF refinery confirmed that an incident occurred on Sunday “on a vessel while contractors were working on the unit during turnaround activities”.

“We want to express our deepest condolences to their families. The safety of our people and operations is a top priority, as additional safety measures will be taken in pace to prevent incidents in future,” the statement added.

The refinery, which has a production capacity of 305,000 barrels per day, is located in Jubail Industrial City and processes crude oil into petroleum products for both local and international markets.

It has a workforce of over 700 employees, the majority of which are Saudi nationals, according to the company’s website.

The refinery was previously a joint venture between Aramco and Royal Dutch Shell, until the former bought it out in September as part of plans to expand its downstream operations.
