Saudi Arabia hopes to recruit 20,000 nationals for driving jobs

Saudi Arabia’s government has launched a campaign to recruit as many as 20,000 nationals to replace foreign drivers working for the likes of Uber and Careem, according to local media reports.

In a report published by Arab News, Majed Al-Zahrani of the Public Transport Authority (PTA) said that the number of Saudi nationals driving taxis had risen from 100,000 in 2016 to over 600,000.

Driving jobs, he added, had become particularly popular since a ban on female drivers was lifted in 2018.

“The number of female Saudi drivers working at these applications had reached 2,000, and the number is rising because of the good income and the safe work environment,” Al-Zahrani said.

Additionally, Al-Zahrani said that the PTA and the kingdom’s Ministry of Labour and Social Development will work together to ensure Saudisation regulations are being properly implemented, with drivers found to be working illegally liable for fines of SAR 5,000 ($1,333).
