Saudi Arabia appoints women to important positions in holy mosques

  • Lifestyle

Saudi officials announced on Sunday the appointment of 10 women to important positions in the two main holy sites of Islam, a step aimed at reinforcing the role of women in the ultra-conservative country of the Gulf.

The appointment of women to positions of responsibility in religious institutions is uncommon in the oil kingdom.

Over time, it has kept women away from the job market. It was only in 2016 that this situation began to change.

The general presidency for matters related to the two holy mosques in Mecca and Medina today announced the appointment of 10 women in different departments, mainly administrative and technical.

A measure aimed at “empowering highly capable and qualified Saudis”, says the statement.
