Saudi Arabia announces tough sanctions to crack down on gatherings

Saudi Arabia has revealed tough sanctions to control the number of people attending gatherings in the kingdom as authorities try to mitigate the spread of coronavirus.




It comes as the country recorded an additional 1,793 cases of Covid-19 on Thursday as well as a further ten deaths. The total number of cases now stands at 33,731 and the death toll, 219.

According to the Saudi Press Agency, the penalty for family gatherings inside homes, rest houses, or farms for more than one family without having a residential relationship is SR10,000. While the penalty for non-family gatherings inside homes, rest houses, farms, camps, chalets, or open areas for the residents of one neighbourhood or others is SR15,000.

The Minister of the Interior also revealed that those gathering for weddings, funerals, parties, seminars, salons, will face a SR30,000 fine.

The penalty for any gathering of workers within houses or buildings under construction, or rest houses or farms, other than their home, is SR50,000.

And the penalty for any gathering of shoppers or workers inside or outside stores exceeding the numbers stipulated in the precautionary and preventive measures is SR5,000 for each person exceeding the numbers, by no more than SR100,000.



A repeat of any of the violations for the first time will see the penalty doubled along with the closure of the private sector facilities for three months.
